What are Dies?

Thread dies, also referred to as thread cutting dies or screw thread cutting dies, are hardened cutting tools designed to produce accurate external threads on cylindrical workpieces such as rod, bar, studs and bolts. Where a tap cuts internal threads inside a pre-drilled hole, a thread die tool cuts external threads on the outside of a workpiece, removing material progressively to produce the required thread profile. Accu stocks thread cutting dies in three formats: circular split dies and solid circular dies, both of which are held in a die stock during use, and die nuts, which are driven directly with a spanner.

Die nuts have a hexagonal outer profile rather than a round one, allowing them to be gripped and rotated with any standard open-ended, ring or socket spanner without a die stock. This makes them particularly suited to thread chasing (restoring damaged, corroded or cross-threaded external threads on existing fasteners, studs or fittings) and to confined locations or partially installed assemblies where a die stock's handles cannot be swung. The cutting action is otherwise the same as a circular die: hardened teeth remove material from the surface of the workpiece to produce the correct thread profile.

How Dies Work

A thread cutting die works by pressing hardened cutting teeth against the surface of a cylindrical workpiece as it is rotated. The lead chamfer at the entry face of the die begins the cut gradually and as the die advances along the workpiece, the full-form teeth progressively remove material to produce the final thread profile. A short reverse rotation after each forward pass breaks the chip and clears swarf from the cutting faces, reducing the risk of die binding or thread damage.

For example, an engineer producing a custom M8 stainless steel stud mounts a metric coarse circular split die in a die stock, applies cutting fluid and advances the die with steady forward pressure. For the finishing pass, they tighten the die stock's centre screw to close the split die to full cutting depth, producing a clean, well-formed thread ready for nut assembly. For a simpler job chasing (restoring) a corroded BSW thread on an existing bolt, they run the appropriate die nut along the thread by hand using a spanner, applying fresh cutting fluid between passes until the full thread profile is restored.

Materials Dies Are Made From

  • Steel (HSS): Provides the hardness and thermal resistance needed to cut clean, accurate threads in mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass and other common engineering materials. 
  • Steel (HSS-E) with RU-VA Coating: Cobalt-enhanced steel improves hardness at elevated temperatures and the RU-VA coating reduces friction at the cutting faces and extends tool life, making these the preferred choice for demanding alloys or higher-volume threading work.

Size and Type Of Dies Available

Q: What is the difference between a thread tap and a thread die?

A: A thread tap cuts internal threads on the inside of a pre-drilled hole, producing the threaded bore that accepts a bolt or screw. A thread die cuts external threads on the outside of a cylindrical workpiece such as a rod, bar or stud, producing the threaded shaft that engages the internal thread. 

The two tools are complementary: a thread tap die set typically contains matching taps and dies for a given thread standard, allowing both mating thread forms to be produced with the same equipment.

Q: How do you use a thread die?

A: For circular thread cutting dies, mount the die in the correct-sized die stock with the chamfered (lead) face pointing toward the workpiece. Apply cutting fluid to the workpiece, press the die squarely onto the end of the bar or stud and rotate the die stock forward with steady pressure. After each full turn, reverse briefly to break the chip and clear swarf, then continue until the thread reaches the required length.

Q: What are the different types of thread dies?

A: There are three main types of thread dies:

  • Circular Split Dies: The most common. Ring-shaped with a single slot cut through them that allows slight cutting diameter adjustment via the die stock's screws, making them suitable for both roughing and finishing passes on a wide range of thread standards. 
  • Solid Circular Dies: Have no slot and a fixed cutting diameter, providing a more rigid cut. 
  • Precision Bell Form Dies: Include a specially ground lead entry for a smoother thread start. 

Q: Should I spray lube while using a die to cut threads?

A: Yes. Cutting fluid should always be applied before and throughout the threading operation. Lubrication reduces friction at the cutting faces, limits heat build-up, improves thread surface finish and extends die life significantly. 

General-purpose cutting fluid suits mild steel and most common metals. A sulphurised threading oil is preferred for tougher alloys and stainless steel. Aluminium and non-ferrous metals typically require a lighter lubricant such as paraffin or WD-40.
