Vernier Calipers are used to measure distances with far greater accuracy than alternative products such as Rules. Certain Calipers are intended to measure outside distances, whereas others are specifically for use with inside distances. Many Vernier Calipers can measure both outside and inside distances with two separate pairs of jaws. Other features which are available on certain models include USB data outputs, depth gauges, and thumb wheels for greater sliding accuracy.

The name ‘Vernier’ refers specifically to the analogue scale which is used on non-digital calipers – despite this, the term ‘Vernier’ is often used interchangeably for digital and analogue calipers alike.
