Universal Joints, also called U Joints or Cardan Joints, are Couplings with an inbuilt pair of hinges, allowing rotary motion to be transmitted along a pair of shafts under angular misalignment.
Because of their design, angled Universal Joints do not transmit rotary motion at a constant velocity. Even when an input speed is constant, the output speed of these mechanisms oscillates in a sinusoidal rhythm. Due to this, Universal Couplings are commonly found in pairs to reverse this effect.
This component is mounted to a shaft using a Split Hub, which should be a tight fit to each shaft. Split Hubs hold an advantage over Pin Hub Universal Joints because they have multiple points of contact, making them less likely to decentralise during operation.
