What are Precision Couplings?

Precision Couplings are designed for the connection of two rotating shafts. Couplings are intended to allow the transmission of torque along a drivetrain, either in a straight line, or through misaligned shafts.

Couplings are particularly important for connecting components such as Stepper Motors to Lead Screws.

A range of Couplings are available, many of which are specialised for use with one of the three main forms of shaft misalignment:

Parallel Misalignment

Shafts which are under parallel misalignment (also called radial misalignment) are parallel with each other, but are not aligned on either a vertical or horizontal plane. Couplings such as Oldham Couplings are designed for this form of misalignment.

Angular Misalignment

Angular misalignment is caused when two shafts are at different angles to each other. Bellows Couplings and Universal Joints are recommended for angular misalignment.

Axial Misalignment

Axially misaligned shafts are at the same angle as each other, and are on the same horizontal and vertical plane, but are axially distant from each other. Component such as Solid Couplings are ideal for this type of misalignment.
